Adam and Lilith are the two pillars holding up the entire mythology of Neon Genesis Evangelion. Understand the difference between them and a huge amount of the series — the Angel attacks, the Human Instrumentality Project, even the name “Eva” — suddenly clicks into place.
They are both “Seeds of Life”
Adam and Lilith were both created by an ancient civilization, the First Ancestral Race, and sent across the cosmos as Seeds of Life — origin points capable of populating a planet with life. The crucial rule: only one seed is supposed to bloom on any given world. A planet that receives two is a cosmic accident. Earth received two: Adam arrived in the White Moon, and Lilith in the Black Moon. In terms of raw status, they are equals. The split: two different kinds of children
The difference between Adam and Lilith isn’t power — it’s lineage. Adam is the progenitor of the Angels. His children inherited the Fruit of Life — symbolized by the S² (Super Solenoid) Engine, which grants the Angels effectively limitless energy and self-regeneration. Lilith is the progenitor of humanity — the Lilin. Her children inherited the Fruit of Knowledge instead: intelligence, self-awareness, tools, civilization — but at the cost of mortality. In short: the Angels got immortality; humanity got intellect. Neither lineage holds both, and that single trade-off is the engine of the entire conflict.
Why this causes a war
Because two seeds bloomed on one planet, two incompatible families now share a world meant for one. The Angel attacks across the series aren’t random aggression — they’re Adam’s children attempting to reach Lilith. If an Angel were ever to merge with Lilith in the wrong configuration, it could trigger a Third Impact that would reset life on Earth. Stopping that contact is NERV’s entire mission.
The twist: humanity is an “Angel” too
It’s revealed that humanity itself is counted as the Eighteenth Angel. Because we are Lilith’s collective offspring, the Lilin are, taxonomically, just another Angel — the same category as the beings we spend the whole show fighting. We are simply the Angel that won.
